Two tigers from Nagpur region to go to Katraj zoo in Pune

NAGPUR: It is official. Principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) Sarjan Bhagat has decided to transfer the five-year-old male tiger kept in Pench enclosure to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park & Wildlife Research Centre at Katraj (Pune). The two-year-old tigress recovering at Seminary Hills is also being considered for Katraj.

"I will issue orders in this regard in a day or two. The zoo at Katraj is well-kept and managed. We will shift the male in next 15 days. The modalities to shift the tiger will be worked out by the Pune zoo and wildlife wing officials," said Bhagat.

He added that Pune chief conservator of forest (CCF) Jeet Singh has sent a positive report in this regard a few days ago.

A three-member team set up by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to reintroduce three tigers - two females and a male - into the wild has already reported that the male is docile and is not fit for release. The tiger had befriended a goat in an enclosure at Bor last year.

When asked, Bhagat said, "We need not wait for release of one female back in the wild. Shifting the male tiger from enclosure will create more space for the two tigresses."

Bhagat further said the Katraj zoo is also ready to accept a female tigress undergoing treatment at Seminary Hills for the past one year. "Though the tigress is fit as per veterinarians advice, the animal's fracture needs to be examined by taking an x-ray," said Bhagat.

The tigress was brought to the city for treatment on April 13, 2013, after it was hit by a speeding train near Chandrapur. It was treated by experts from Nagpur Veterinary College Dr NP Dakshinkar and Dr Shirish Upadhye and later monitored by wildlife department vet Dr Chitra Raut.

"The tigress is around two years and is fit for release. However, we want to finally examine whether its femur fracture is all right," said Dr Upadhye.

Earlier, the male tiger Bhangaram (Talodi) was sought by Maharajbagh Zoo in the city for breeding purpose, with the condition that the forest department take back one of the two tigresses kept at the zoo.

However, the wildlife wing officials were wary of shifting the male tiger to the zoo owing to the bad conditions and lack of proper infrastructure. "The zoo's recognition has come to an end on April 30, and it doesn't have Central Zoo Authority (CZA) nod for tiger breeding," says Bhagat.

He is also considering shifting the disabled male tiger temporarily kept in Maharajbagh zoo to some rescue centre, maybe to Bannerghatta National Park near Bengaluru. The tiger was injured and lost his paw after it was caught in a trap laid by poachers at Gondmohadi in Chandrapur in 2012. "As per CZA norms, a disabled animal cannot be displayed. While the rescue centre at Gorewada will take time to come up, Borivli has no space and hence it will be sent to a rescue centre," Bhagat said.

Zoo animals consume feed worth Rs59 lakh

Feeding animals perhaps seems to be the only positive aspect of Maharajbagh Zoo, which is grappling with infrastructure issues. Queries sought by Abhay Kolarkar under the RTI Act have revealed that in the last year, from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, the zoo spent Rs 59.35 lakh to feed animals and birds. Of this, over Rs 12 lakh was spent towards beef for wild animals. The zoo officer in charge Dr SS Bawaskar also informed that last year only five animals died, while 28 new animals arrived in the zoo. "However, the number of animal deaths may be more, looking at the habit of zoo authorities of hiding facts," says Kolarkar.
