Oomen Chandy urges PM Modi to safeguard Kerala’s interests in Western Ghats

NEW DELHI: Amid reports that the Centre may review its decision on Western Ghats, Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his intervention in solving issues concerning implementation of green reports to protect the ecologically sensitive ghats.

Chandy, who met the PM at his office, said he expressed concern over reports that the NDA government would take a final decision soon on whether Madhav Gadgil Committee report or Kasturirangan panel report should be implemented to protect the biodiversity-rich hills.

He later met environment minister Prakash Javadekar and expressed similar concern. Javadekar, however, assured him that his ministry would discuss the issue with all stakeholders, including environmentalists, before taking any decision.

After the meeting, Javadekar tweeted, "I assured Kerala chief minister that we will take into consideration inputs from all stakeholders ... We will take care of development and environment protection both."

Chandy is against implementation of the Gadgil panel report as he fears it would hit the livelihood of millions of people living on the hills. He demanded that affected states should be consulted before taking a final decision on the issue.

"The prime minister assured me that the Centre will hear the views of the states concerned before taking a final decision on the matter," Chandy told reporters.

The UPA government had notified implementation of the Kasturirangan report in Kerala and asked other states - Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu - to submit their views to the environment ministry.

The Kasturirangan panel report is a diluted version of the Gadgil Committee report, allowing non-polluting activities like plantation and agriculture in eco-sensitive zones within Western Ghats comprising parts of six states. The two reports were prepared during the UPA rule.
