JAIPUR: Jal Mahal, city's premier bird watching spot, has become a host to the season's first batch of migratory birds--Northern Shovelors, Northern Pintail, Coot, Wigol and Common Pochard-who arrived at the Man Sagar Lake a few days ago.

Bird watchers estimated the arrival of around 1000 birds (migratory and resident), which is a good number compared to a last couple of years. Also, experts said numbers will swell up to three times than what it is now by the end of this month but how long they will sustain is uncertain.

Reason being the shortage of feed, which is aquatic vegetation for migratory birds and fishes for residents birds. "Migratory birds survive on microorganisms, plantations, which are deficient in the lake. The water quality has improved in the last few years but now some remedial steps need to be taken to germinate aquatic vegetation," said Harshvardhan, an environmentalist.

The water body has 20 types of Tilpoys, a kind of fish that has 2-3 inches-long thorns on neck making it difficult for the birds to gulp. The Tilpoys breeds four times in a year and have outnumbered other kinds of consumable fishes.

In such a situation, birds move to other water bodies for feed. Harshvardhan said he counted over 5000 birds in the census 20 years ago and the number could have swelled manifold considering the growth but over the years poor water quality, mismanagement of the lake and less feed for birds has not allowed too a good rise in the numbers.

He recalled that the damage of the lake began when sewerage waters started increasing the silt load and it formed a thick bed in the lake. It resulted in the reduction of water intake and increase in toxicity. The lake area would dry-up during summer disturbing the aquatic ecology.

The water treatment plant at the lake is partly functional and is aggravating the situation, said sources. However, the quality of water has improved in last few years owing to efforts of volunteers, who organize various campaigns.

He suggested that plantation of trees around the lake and amidst the lake will increase the habitat and nesting of birds.
