Wild tension in Karnataka

BANGALORE: Every year in Karnataka, around 30 people get killed and hundreds get injured due to attacks by wild animals, most of them elephants.

In the last five years, from 2008-09, 147 people have lost their lives in the state. Human deaths are reported more from Bangalore, Chamarajnagar, Hassan, Mysore and Kodagu.

The areas affected due to man-animal conflict are - Chikmagalur, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Hassan, Uttar Kannada, Kodagu, Mangalore, Mysore, Shimoga, Bangalore, Belgaum, Bellary and Chamarajnagar.

Besides the attacks, it is the raid on their fields by the animals, which has made the farmers spend sleepless nights. The crop loss cases are reported the maximum in Bellary, Bangalore, Hasasan, Kodagu and Mysore districts. The wild boars, black bucks and deer, along with elephants are eating into the farmers' crops.

Take for instance, Tumkur district. The elephants from Savandurga forest, which had camped in Mallasandra and different lakes in Gubbi taluk, have destroyed nearly 700 acres of coconut, areca nut, banana, and paddy crops.

The leopards are spotted in the forest areas of Tiptur, Tumkur, Kunigal and Chikkanayakanahalli taluks. The leopards have killed several domestic animals and one of them attacked a man in Tiput six months ago. Recently a wild cat was caught at Nagathihalli village and three leopards have been caught this year in Tiptur and Kunigal.

Recently, a bear entered the Tumkur city and attacked a man. Bear attacks are a common feature in Madhugiri, Chikkanayakanahalli, Koratageare, Pavagada and Tumkur. Following their large numbers, the Karnataka State wildlife Board has given its preliminary approval to set up a bear sanctuary in the district.

In Koppal, it is the black bucks. During 2012-13, 9,136 cases of crop loss have been reported from the district, forcing the government to pay a compensation of Rs 1.36 crore. In the 2010-11 budget, the government announced that it would form a black buck sanctuary and shift all the animals there. However, the project was shelved as black bucks are sensitive animals and faced the risk of death during capture and rehabilitation.

COMPENSATION WOES: People are unhappy because the compensation package leaves much to be deserved and involves a long bureaucratic procedure. Even to get that compensation, the kin of victims or the victims, most times farmers, have to struggle a lot.

Firstly, relief will not be paid if the deaths, permanent disability, injury, crop loss or domestic animal deaths take place on encroached forestland.
