The Malabar pit viper, which is commonly found in the Western Ghats, is rarely spotted in the plains. It was spotted by the farm owner on Diwali. "It should have escaped into the farm after slipping in timber or vegetables transported from Megamalai or Vellimalai in the Western Ghats. We are planning to take the snake back to its habitat because releasing it in local forests will only endanger it," said P Ramesh of the Nethaji Snake Trust.
Ramesh said Malabar pit vipers cannot survive the hot temperatures of the plains. The habitat of the poisonous snake is green and deciduous forests and it feeds on lizards, frogs and small birds. "The rescued snake was fortunate to survive in Usilampatti since the place was getting showers for last few days," he noted.
The green vine snake (Ahaetulla nasuta) was rescued from the premises of a doctor's residence in Usilampatti by the members of Nethaji Snake Trust. The snake, which was captured and brought to the trust premises on Monday, delivered 14 snakelets that night itself. This was revealed when the cotton bag containing the snake was opened on Tuesday morning. One juvenile was however found dead, the trust people said.
District forest officer A S Marimuthu said the department has received the news about the rescue of the snakes and they will be safely released back into forest.
