Aimed at promoting tourism at the International level, the week-long Fam tour would enable the tour operators and the host to partner for a comprehensive marketing and promotion deal, the tourism department official said.
A B2B (business to business) meet with over 50 local partners have also been scheduled during their week-long visit of international tour operators from the UK, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, South Africa, Korea, New Zealand, Italy, Thailand, Ireland and Bangladesh.
Among the other itineraries for the operators are the 100 drums Wangala of the Garos and visits to Sohra and other important tourist spots in the state.
The state which received over 20 lakh tourists in the last three years (2010-2012) wanted to garner more foreign visitors whose footfalls in the last three years was a mere 15,000.
The government has till date officially announced 40 spots as tourist destinations, most of which do not have the facilities to host tourists.
East Khasi Hills district with Sohra, (the erstwhile Cherrapunjee) and the state capital Shillong, still attracts the bulk of tourists, the official said.
The beautiful landscape, the hospitality of the local people and the mid range weather where you can feel at ease without an AC in the heights of summer can easily surpass any states in the north east region. Yet Meghalaya remains an unlikely holiday destination for many. It is a situation the state wants to rectify.
