NEW DELHI: Marking a new first, Puri's famous Jagannath Temple will soon turn green with a Kolkatta-based solar module-making firm Vikram Solar installing a 30kW solar power facility on its premises.

The project is part of the initiative of Odisha Renewable Energy Development Authority (OREDA). The successful implementation of this project would result in a pioneering move by this ancient historical temple which will be reducing its dependence on grid power during the day time and use the solar power generated by it.

The temple's current daily consumption is 80kW per day. Solar power will comprise almost one-third, or 30 per cent, of it.

As per the agreement, Vikram Solar will extend full service support to the temple management committee for the next 15 years. It will be responsible for supplying the solar photovoltaic modules and other associated equipment, including installation and commissioning of the facility.

The firm has been asked to ensure that installation causes least inconvenience to the visitors. At the same time, the design of the installation has to be such that it retains the feel and texture of the ancient architecture for which the temple is known for as one of the "Chardhams".
